  • BAC - Breath Alcohol Content- Expressed as the numerical ration between milligrams of alcohol in a 100 milliliters of blood.
  • Breathalyzer – A breath analysis device which produces an estimate of BAC based upon the chemical analysis of a breath sample. The technology has become outdated, with law enforcement agencies turning to more accurate testing devices. Many mistake new BAC measuring technology for Breathalyzers because of its previous popularity.
  • DUI – Driving Under the Influence
  • DWI – Driving While Intoxicated
  • "Implied Consent" Law - Law in Washington DC, as well as other jurisdictions, where one is presumed to have consented to a chemical test if someone is suspected of violating a traffic alcohol law.
  • Intoxilyzers - A breath analysis machine producing an estimate of BAC based on infrared spectroscopy.
  • NHTSA – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Sobriety Testing Definitions

  • Walk and Turn – A standardized field sobriety test that is administered by requiring the subject to walk heel-to-toe along a real or imaginary line, then turn and return in the same manner. Certain clues of impairment are looked for by law enforcement.
  • One Leg Stand – A standardized field sobriety test that is administered by requiring a subject to stand on one leg and count to 30 by thousands. Certain clues of impairment are looked for by law enforcement.
  • Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) - An involuntary jerking of the eyeball intensified by alcohol consumption. Test is administered by law enforcement using a stimulus and requires a subject to track the stimulus with their eyes. Certain clues of impairment are looked for by law enforcement.
